Open WebUI is a free interface for working with AI models that can be installed on your own computer or server. It connects local models through Ollama and any cloud services with an OpenAI-compatible API, including OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter, Groq, Mistral, LM Studio, and vLLM. It can run completely offline. It is one of the most popular projects in its niche on GitHub, with more than 150,000 stars; the latest version was released on October 29, 2026.
Features and Use Cases
- Multiple models in one chat. You can ask several models the same question at once and compare their answers. There is also a built-in “arena” for blind comparisons and model rankings.
- Document processing (RAG). Search through your own files and knowledge bases, with 9 vector databases to choose from, PDF and scanned-document recognition, and hybrid search.
- Web search. Dozens of search providers are supported, including SearXNG, Google, Brave, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Perplexity, and others; the model can open pages on its own.
- Agents and tools. Create custom assistants based on any model with their own instructions and knowledge, use Python plugins, connect MCP servers, and access a terminal for task execution.
- Voice and images. Voice and video calls with the model, speech recognition and synthesis, and image generation and editing through DALL·E, Gemini, ComfyUI, and AUTOMATIC1111.
- For teams. User roles and groups, LDAP, OAuth, and SSO authentication, shared channels, notes, calendars, and token-usage statistics broken down by users and models.
Installation and Requirements
It can be installed with a single command: pip install open-webui, through Docker (prebuilt images with Ollama and NVIDIA GPU support are available), or via Kubernetes. Registration on the project website is not required. Data is stored in SQLite or PostgreSQL, while files can be kept locally or in cloud storage such as S3, Google Cloud, or Azure.
Plans and Pricing
The interface itself is free; you only pay for cloud model APIs if you use them. The license allows you to remove the Open WebUI logo only in installations with up to 50 users; larger deployments require an enterprise license. The enterprise plan, which includes SSO, auditing, offline installation, and support, is available on request; pricing is not listed on the website.
FAQ
Do I need a VPN to use the service?
It depends on your region. If the service is not available in your country, its site says so; a VPN is a way around regional limits, but follow the rules of the service and the laws of your country. The easiest check is to open the service site.
Is it safe to share my data with an AI tool?
Do not enter passwords, payment details, personal data or trade secrets. Many services store requests and may use them to train models, especially on free plans. Check the privacy policy and the settings of the service, where training can often be switched off.
