Gradescope is a platform by Turnitin for collecting and grading academic work: paper-based exams, homework, tests with answer sheets, and source code. Instructors grade submissions question by question using shared rubrics, while AI speeds up routine tasks. According to the service, it is used by more than 140,000 instructors and 3.2 million students across 2,600+ universities.
What It Can Do
- Rubric-based grading. Submissions are graded question by question; changing a rubric immediately recalculates scores for all students.
- AI Answer Groups. For some question types, AI automatically groups similar answers, allowing the instructor to grade an entire group in a single action.
- AI student roster matching. Scanned submissions are automatically matched to students.
- Assignment types. Paper-based exams (scans), student-uploaded PDFs, answer sheets, online assignments, and programming assignments with automated code grading and similar-code detection.
- Appeals and analytics. Grade regrade requests, assignment statistics, and grade exports.
- Apps for students on iOS and Android to photograph and submit their work.

FAQ
Do I need a VPN to use the service?
It depends on your region. If the service is not available in your country, its site says so; a VPN is a way around regional limits, but follow the rules of the service and the laws of your country. The easiest check is to open the service site.
Is it safe to share my data with an AI tool?
Do not enter passwords, payment details, personal data or trade secrets. Many services store requests and may use them to train models, especially on free plans. Check the privacy policy and the settings of the service, where training can often be switched off.
