GitHub Copilot is an AI coding assistant from GitHub (Microsoft). It works in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Xcode, and other editors, as well as in the terminal and on the GitHub website. It writes code, explains it, fixes bugs, and can complete tasks on its own—from making an edit to opening a ready-to-review pull request.

What it can do

  • Code completion. In-line code suggestions as you type, plus suggestions for your next edit.
  • Chat in your editor and on GitHub: ask questions about code, get explanations, write tests, and refactor.
  • Agents. The editor agent edits multiple files and runs commands; the cloud agent takes an issue and opens a pull request.
  • Code review with comments on pull requests.
  • Model selection. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google models; Pro also gives you access to third-party agents Claude Code and Codex.

Do I need a VPN to use the service?

It depends on your region. If the service is not available in your country, its site says so; a VPN is a way around regional limits, but follow the rules of the service and the laws of your country. The easiest check is to open the service site.

Is it safe to share my data with an AI tool?

Do not enter passwords, payment details, personal data or trade secrets. Many services store requests and may use them to train models, especially on free plans. Check the privacy policy and the settings of the service, where training can often be switched off.
